Les Cavill and fast cars, the story so far............... Before migrating to Perth Western Australia from the UK, I was originally employed with Lotus Developments at their then new factory complex in Hertfordshire. Lotus Developments was the division of the Lotus Company that was responsible for developing new cars. During my time with Lotus I took part in the Lotus Elan and Lotus 23 sports racer programmes. All new racing designs were produced in the Developments workshop including the F1 cars and I was closely involved with the Trevor Taylor formula junior car that was run by the Lotus Developments division. This was an amazing period and for some time to come Colin Chapman and his talented team were to dominate design and technical innovation. As a junior my tasks were more of a menial nature but I still remember Colins willingness to change a winning set up in search of the that little bit extra, with sometimes a less than ideal result! This early experience with Lotus and the many subsequent years in the specialist car field has left me with a wide knowledge and many good friends and contacts in this area. After arriving in Perth I was to eventually open a classic, high performance and race car preparation business. Due to a climbing accident in 1985, I am no longer involved in the hands-on side of vehicle engineering. During the last 40 years in addition to my aforementioned business, I have been also personally involved as a specialist car broker, a racing car entrant or sometime racing driver or more recently as a classic car restorer to 'concourse' winning standards. Owing to some health problems in 2001 I have been prevented from returning to the track since but these irritations are now behind me and I am threatening to once again to give whoever is in front of me on the track, a hard time! |
